Casuarina cunninghamiana, commonly known as river oak or river she-oak, is a she-oak species of the genus Casuarina. The native range in Australia extends from Daly River in the Northern Territory, north and east in Queensland and eastern New South Wales.

Tropical Oaks are native from Eastern and Northern Australia. An evergreen tree that makes a classic bonsai. It's a fast growing tree that can reach 20 meters tall in the wild. A dignified tree with finely fissured and scaly, grey-brown bark. Thick branches start growing low to the ground much like that of a pine tree. The bark is finely fissured and scaly, grey-brown. An attractive spreading form with needle-like foliage.

Young trees typically have a pyramidal crown with ascending branches; the crown becomes more open with maturity. It's a tree that tolerates hard trimming. Male flower spikes are borne at the tips of shoots and small rounded female flowers occur in clusters along the branches. Fertilized female flowers develop into rounded cones which ripen in the Fall and shed seeds.

Hardiness zones 4-9, (-5C/25F, -32C/-25F) in Winter. Use standard potting mix with a little sand. Soil pH is generally acidic to neutral. Water freely during growing season, moderately in Winter months. Very drought tolerant and it likes well-drained soil. Once established it will survive drought periods, but growth would be reduced. Grow in full light. It is very tolerant of tough conditions, dry or wet, hot or windy. It will tolerate windy coastal conditions, also frosts and snow, if well-protected.

This one needs no pre-treatment. Only cover the seeds with 1/4" of your soil mixture. Keep damp soil, not soaking wet. Keep pot in warm situation 20C/68F, 24C/75F. Germination can take several months. It can be more, don't give up.
