Sarracenia rubra gulfensis is probably the most hardy subspecies of Sarracénia rubra. It produces hatches up to 40 cm high. In its natural habitat, it is found in muddy soils near rivers and ponds, mainly in Northwest Florida. Sarracenia rubra gulfensis blooms in April. The small, bright red flowers have a slight sweet smell. The plant is bright red. The mouth of the hatch is approximately 2.4 to 3.5 cm in diameter. At the end of summer, the plant develops red leaves. Sarracenia rubra gulfensis grows from May to November. They catch their prey by offering them a nectar which is secreted around the mouth of the plant and at its inner base. The insects will find the nectar, and if they take a wrong step, will fall into the trap. Once at the interior, retreat is impossible. Small, stiff hairs point downward, retaining insects. The inside of the hatch is also very slippery; even the insects with the best traction will not be able to get out. When the insect reaches the bottom, it is dissolved by enzymes, providing the plant with essential nutrients
