This stunning, terrestrial bromeliad forms a dense rosette of stiff, sword-shaped leaves that are green above and silvery below. Unlike other Puya, they are not spiny along the margins. When mature after a few years, a large, club-shaped inflorescence with blue flowers grows from the center of the plant. Puya dasylirioides is native only to Costa Rica, where it grows in paramo vegetation between 2400 and 3300 m elevation. It will succeed in cool temperate and cool Mediterranean climates such as coastal California.
