Briza maxima (big quaking grass, rattlesnake grass) is a winter annual grass (family Poaceae).Briza maxima is a species of the grass genus Briza. It is native to Northern Africa, the Azores, Western Asia, and Southern Europe and is cultivated or naturalised in the British Isles, Australasia, the western United States, Central and South America, and Hawaii.

This ornamental grass is an easy to grow perennial that forms dense clumps and bears graceful, nodding, oval-shaped seed heads. They emerge an iridescent green from April through June and turn golden with maturity and look like little fairy lanterns or the end of rattlesnake tails. The seed heads shiver and become almost animated when touched by summer breezes. Quaking Grass Briza maxima is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance.

How To Grow Quaking Grass From Ornamental Grass Seeds: It is best to sow Quaking Grass seeds directly outdoors. Prepare the soil and rake it to a fine tilth. Press the ornamental grass seeds in the soil. The time for sowing the seeds is either at the end of summer or in spring once there is no danger of frost. Ornamental Quaking Grass should be cut back in spring before new growth starts. The Briza maxima grass plants tolerate light shade but too much shade will decrease the number of blooms.
