A shrubby, large cactus to about 6 m tall with flattened, sparsely spiny, green shoots and yellow or red flowers followed by oblong, sweet and juicy, edible fruits. Originally probably native to Mexico, Opuntia ficus-indica is widely naturalized and cultivated for its fruits and young shoots that are known as nopales in Mexico. The tasty fruits of this form from the Mexican State of Coahuila are maroon and have deep dark red flesh.
