Easily mistaken for a cycad, this marvelous tree fern sports a thick, upright trunk to about 1 m tall and an ascending crown of numerous stiff, conspicuously keeled leaves. It is native to cloud forest and paramo in the high Andes between Colombia to Bolivia from 1900 to 3900 m. Blechnum auratum is essentially unknown in cultivation but certainly a plant with enormous ornamental potential. It requires a humid, cool, warm temperate climate and will thrive in sun or light shade.
