The cherimoya (Annona cherimola), also spelled chirimoya and called chirimuya by the Inca people, is a species of edible fruit-bearing plant in the genus Annona, from the family Annonaceae, which includes the closely related sweetsop and soursop. A large shrub, originally native to montane forests in the Andes of South America, but now widely cultivated for its delicious fruits, which, under a thin, green skin, have very sweet, soft, white, custard-like flesh that can be scooped out with a spoon. Annona cherimola does best in frost free, warm temperate areas.
