Germination of
Tsuga Heterophylla
Western Hemlock Bonsai Tree: Mountain Hemlock, Tsuga, Canadian Hemlock
Tsuga heterophylla, commonly known as the western hemlock, can be grown from seed. Collect mature cones in late summer or fall and store them in a paper bag in a cool, dry location until the cones open and release their seeds. Sow the seeds in a potting mix that contains peat moss, perlite, and sand and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist and place the pot in a cool, bright location with indirect sunlight. The seeds will germinate slowly, and it may take up to several months before they emerge.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
