Germination of
Dahlia pinnata
Orchid Pinewheel Dahlia: Dahlia 'Pinwheel', Collarette Dahlia, Peony Dahlia, Waterlily Dahlia, Pompon Dahlia
Dahlia pinnata: The seeds of Dahlia pinnata should be sown indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date in well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5. The seeds should be planted 1 cm deep and kept in a warm, humid location with temperatures between 18-21C. It is important to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during germination, which typically occurs within 10-14 days. Once the seedlings have emerged, they can be gradually hardened off and transplanted to their final location after the last frost date.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
